What Good Glass Work Looks Like Before the Sealant Dries

I Start With the Opening, Not the Glass

I never order a panel after taking one quick measurement. Walls lean, tile builds out unevenly, and older framing can shift enough to make a square opening behave like a trapezoid. On a typical shower enclosure, I measure the width at 3 heights and compare both vertical lines before I decide how much adjustment the hardware must absorb. That extra ten minutes can prevent an expensive remake.

A customer last winter had a newly tiled shower that looked straight from the doorway. My level showed the curb dropping almost 3/8 inch from one end to the other, while the right wall leaned inward near the top. I changed the panel dimensions, adjusted the hinge placement, and planned the sweep around the low corner. The finished door closed cleanly because the glass was made for the opening that actually existed.

I also inspect what sits behind the finished surface. A heavy frameless door needs solid backing where the hinges land, and a wall anchor alone is not a substitute for proper blocking. Fabrication Quality Shows Up in Small Details

I pay close attention to polished edges, hole placement, corner treatment, and tempering marks before a panel ever reaches the opening. A clean polish should feel consistent from end to end, without flat spots, chips, or cloudy sections near the corners. Hardware cutouts must match the fittings closely because a few millimeters of error can create stress around a hole. Glass is unforgiving.

A 28-inch door may look generous on paper but feel awkward if it opens into a narrow walkway. Daily movement should shape the design.

For mirrors, I check light sources and sightlines before deciding where seams or outlets should land. A large wall mirror can make a small room feel brighter, yet it will also reveal a bowed wall, uneven backsplash, or crooked ceiling line. Installation Day Should Feel Controlled

I arrive expecting the site to differ slightly from the original visit. Before lifting a large panel, I clear the route and protect the curb, floor, and nearby fixtures. Two people handle pieces that are too large or awkward for one safe lift.

I dry-fit hardware whenever the sequence allows it, then tighten fittings gradually rather than forcing one corner into position. On a frameless enclosure, I check reveals several times while the door is supported, because a small hinge change can alter the gap at the handle side. I apply sealant only after the glass sits correctly and the moving parts operate without contact. I usually ask the customer to keep the shower dry for at least 24 hours, depending on the product used.

Cleanup is part of the installation. I remove labels, wipe fingerprints, collect plastic shims, and check the floor for small metal pieces before I pack the truck. Then I demonstrate the door, point out the areas that should remain unsealed for drainage, and explain which cleaners I avoid on coated hardware. Five careful minutes at the end can prevent months of confusion.

What I Consider a Professional Result

I judge a finished job by alignment, movement, drainage, and how the glass relates to the room. Gaps should look intentional, doors should move without scraping, and exposed sealant should be neat rather than used to hide poor measurements. On a typical shower, I step back at least 6 feet and view the enclosure from several angles before calling it done. Small visual errors become obvious from the doorway.

I also pay attention to what happens after the invoice is paid. A reliable glass company should answer reasonable questions, explain care clearly, and return if an adjustment is genuinely needed. Some settling is normal with heavy doors, especially during the first few weeks, but repeated slipping can point to a hardware or installation issue. Good glass work is mostly quiet work. I measure carefully, choose hardware that suits the load, and refuse to let sealant become a substitute for fit. The result should still look right after 2 years of daily use, not just during the final photograph. That is the standard I bring to every opening.
